Carbon avoidance

REDD+ Mix

The REDD+ (Reducing Emissions from Deforestation and Forest Degradation) framework was created by the United Nations Framework Convention on Climate Change (UNFCCC) to reduce deforestation in developing countries.

By supporting this project mix, you’ll be contributing to the following projects:

  1. Matavén

  2. Corazón

  3. Katingan

Matavén

The Matavén REDD+ project addresses these environmental and social issues by safeguarding the tropical forest within the Indigenous Reservation of the Matavén Forest, covering 1,150,212 hectares.

Before the REDD+ Matavén Project, the Indigenous communities of Matavén faced significant challenges. Despite being exceptional guardians of their forests, they lacked access to essential resources like education, healthcare, and markets. With few alternatives, mining, livestock expansion, and illegal activities became some of the only viable income sources, leading to deforestation and threatening their lands, culture, and livelihoods.

You’ll be able to read more about the project here.

Corazón

The Gran Chaco is South America’s second-largest forest, spanning more than twice the size of California. It is one of the most ecologically diverse regions on Earth, home to a vast range of species and landscapes, including savannahs, rainforests, and wetlands. Despite its global significance, Gran Chaco is facing rapid deforestation, with Paraguay suffering the most severe losses. Data collected from WRI’s Global Forest Watch showed deforestation increased by 78% in 2019, with a football pitch of forest being destroyed every two minutes in the Paraguayan Chaco. The primary drivers of this destruction are cattle ranching and soybean cultivation, which have led to the clearing of millions of hectares of land.

The Corazón Verde del Chaco Project, a REDD+ initiative, aims to halt deforestation and reduce greenhouse gas emissions by conserving at-risk forest areas. By maintaining these carbon-rich ecosystems, the project supports global climate stability.

Katingan

The Katingan Mentaya Project (KMP) is a tropical peatland forest protection and restoration project in Central Kalimantan Province of Indonesia, on the island of Borneo. The project was enacted to prevent the planned conversion of the forest area to industrial-scale acacia plantations, preventing the release of greenhouse gas emissions that would have occurred had the project not intervened.

The project area covers 157,875 hectares of land, divided into two ecosystem restoration concession licences. The wider project zone represents the extent of the area in which the project activities are implemented.

The Katingan Project’s goal is to protect and restore the peatland ecosystem; to offer local people sustainable sources of income; and to tackle global climate change.

Benefits

Across all three REDD+ initiatives, the core climate benefit comes from avoiding greenhouse gas emissions and enhancing carbon storage through forest and peatland protection.

  • The Katingan Mentaya project prevents extensive peatland emissions and generates about 7.5 million verified carbon credits annually, directly contributing to global mitigation efforts.

  • The Corazón Verde del Chaco Project protects these carbon-rich forests, preventing their loss and the resulting CO₂ emissions, thereby helping stabilise the global climate system.

The project supports improved health and well-being for local communities by providing access to healthcare centres, dental services, and better sanitation facilities, reducing health risks and enhancing quality of life.

By facilitating education programs within Indigenous communities, the project empowers local populations through knowledge and skill development, ensuring long-term benefits for individuals and their communities.

Improved sanitation infrastructure in local villages contributes to better water quality and hygiene, promoting healthier living conditions for the Indigenous population.

The project creates sustainable employment opportunities, such as ranger positions, and supports alternative livelihoods that align with forest conservation, enabling economic growth while protecting natural resources.

Through the development of healthcare, education, and sanitation facilities, the project invests in essential infrastructure that enhances community resilience and fosters sustainable development.

By reducing deforestation and preventing greenhouse gas emissions, the project directly combats climate change, contributing to global efforts to mitigate its impacts.

Through the protection of diverse species and forest ecosystems, the project plays a critical role in preserving biodiversity in the region. Conservation efforts help maintain natural habitats and promote ecological stability.
