In the last few days we’ve received photos from our planting site in Marataola, Madagascar!
We hope you can share in our delight at seeing some new growth on these little mangroves! As you read this, our local planters are busily planting 100’s of mangroves a day with Eden Reforestation and our site is filling up with new life!
On an important note, Eden Reforestation is committed to supporting our planting sites, the local communities who tend to them, and the security who protects these sites, during the COVID-19 pandemic.

But first! Let’s check out our baby trees! 🍃🌿🌱🙌

If you look closely you can start to see some green leaves! This is a great sign the little mangroves are settling into their new home.

When it comes to planting trees we rely on the local communities to plant the saplings (also known as propagules). It’s hard work, as you can see – the tidal silt is heavy going for the planters.
As a general rule of thumb, the planters plant one mangrove every two metres, and this works out as around every two steps.

Getting ready for the days work with a full bag of propagules (mangrove saplings).

The planters tend to start work after breakfast and finish at sunset.
This work creates vital jobs for the local community.
So far Ecologi has secured 11,818 work days for locals in Marataola, Madagascar. There’s a team of about 6 individual planters who will work on this particular site over the next few months.
They make sure the propagules go straight in, pressing one third of the mangrove seedling down into the mud. This is how they naturally fall from the trees, so the planters are giving them a helping hand and spreading the seeds a little further 🌱

We will be planting across the whole of this vast empty area.
Over at the Ecologi member’s planting site, there are huge swathes of deforested land. It’s important to show these sites too, as this is where our next mangrove lots will be planted.

Soon this will be full of bustling life, you can already see the green shoots.
Although it will take years for this area to be fully restored, this is the first step to making this area the special and vital habitat it once was to the community.

What a beautiful sight!
Our member’s contributions are turning into real-earth restoration. So far, with your help, we’ve secured the planting of over 1.3 million mangroves in this area 💚🌎
We’ll keep you updated as more photos become available!
