Our second year in numbers

Last July, just after our first birthday, we published Our First Year in Numbers – a brief look at how far we’d come in our first 12 months as Ecologi.

Now, we are turning two, and we have even more incredible stats from our second year of funding climate solutions.

This is one of our favourite numbers to track. After our first year, we funded over 2.3 million trees planted by our partners around the world.

Now, our community has funded well over 16.5 million trees – and counting!

In the next phase of our impact operations we’re expanding our capacity for reforestation and starting new partnerships with tree-planting organisations; bringing our funding to more areas in need of restoration and reforestation around the world.

Each year, we tally up all the people who are accounted for across our individual subscriptions, Climate Positive Workforce® subscriptions, and the adults represented in our family subscriptions, to calculate the number of ‘Climate Positive people’ in our community.

This means our community has more than trebled in size in the past 12 months (in our 1st birthday update we reported 11,148 Climate Positive people on the platform).

On our first birthday in 2020 we had reached a total reduction of just under 100,000 verified tonnes of carbon. This was done through the purchase of carbon credits to account for the carbon footprints of the individuals on our platform. 

Just 12 months later, we’re well on our way to 450,000 verified tonnes of emissions reduced. According to data from the EPA, that’s approximately equivalent to the emissions produced from the consumption of over 50 million gallons of gasoline.

A significant reduction  of emissions are required to align the planet with a 1.5ºC future and we’re incredibly proud of the growing ability of our community to divert these funds to incredible carbon projects that are dragging emissions down.

We’ve all got such a long way to go, but starting out by increasing our carbon impact 4x in a year isn’t bad!

Our business subscriptions have more than doubled in the past 12 months, with more and more businesses coming aboard to make their workforces Climate Positive.

The Climate Positive Workforce® subscription allows businesses to offset the lifestyle emissions of their employees through verified carbon reduction projects and also plant trees on their behalf.

Stores hosted on Shopify can use our tree-planting API to trigger tree-planting into their impact profile automatically. We’ve set up an app that can be dropped in, and set up in just minutes.

Since we launched the Shopify integration we’ve got well over 1,300 partner stores planting trees alongside their sales.

Adding up the 11 reforestation projects we’re currently supporting and the 45 carbon reduction projects we’ve supported since we started Ecologi, that’s a total of 56 brilliant projects working to solve climate change!

Some of our favourite emissions reduction projects we’ve supported in the past 12 months include peatland restoration in Indonesia, forest protection in Zimbabwe and Papua New Guinea, and a small hydropower project in Uganda.

This comes alongside regular community funding we’ve put towards solar, wind, and other renewable energy projects, as well as our reforestation efforts all over the globe.
